KOTA KINABALU: A secondary school student was found dead in her hostel room at around 6.45pm Wednesday (July 15).
The 15-year-old girl from Kota Marudu district was believed to have taken her own life.
Kota Kinabalu OCPD Asst Comm Habibi Majinji said prior to the discovery of her death, the girl was with four other roommates in their hostel room.
“The girl was left alone when her roommates went out for a while, ” he said.
He said upon returning, the girls found that their room door had been locked and when they called for the girl, there was no response coming from inside the room.
ACP Habibi said the girls immediately alerted their warden, who broke the door down when there was still no response amid persistent knocking on the door.
“The friends and warden found the girl hanged from a rope and unconscious, ” he said.
The victim’s family was immediately notified and the body has been taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for post-mortem.
No elements of foul play were found in the case, which police have classified under a Sudden Death Report pending the post-mortem results.
It is not known whether the victim had any history of depression or any form of mental health issues.
