KOTA KINABALU: A man who was allegedly selling turtle eggs online was caught red-handed by authorities here.
The 21-year-old was detained at a parking lot near a supermarket in Putatan at about 11am yesterday.
Sabah Wildlife Department director Augustine Tuuga said they seized 20 turtle eggs during the operation called Ops Tapau.
He said the department had been gathering information about this illegal online trade from the public.
“We launched an investigation and finally caught a suspect,” he said.
Tuuga reminded the public that all turtles were protected under the Wildlife Conservation Enactment.
Recently, conservationists discovered that turtle eggs were being sold on e-commerce platforms and social media.
The management of an online sales portal has since taken down a post and issued an apology, besides warning users against using the platform to sell contraband.
