PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia reported 78 more Covid-19 cases on Friday (May 22), bringing the country’s total infections to 7,137.

This is the first time in 10 days that the number of cases in a single day exceeded 50.

Out of the 78 new cases, 25 were imported cases while the others were local transmissions, said Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah announced at the Health Ministry’s daily Covid-19 media briefing Friday afternoon.

There were also 25 more cases from the Bukit Jalil Immigration Depot cluster, in addition to the 35 announced the day before.

Dr Noor Hisham also said 63 more patients had been discharged, which means 5,859 patients have recovered from Covid-19 in Malaysia since the outbreak began.

Malaysia’s Covid-19 recovery rate is now at 82.1% out of the total number of positive cases.

There are 1,163 active cases being treated at the country’s health facilities at present.

Nine patients are being treated in intensive care units (ICU), with seven on ventilator support.

Dr Noor Hisham also announced one new death, taking the country’s death toll to 115.

The 115th death case is a 65-year-old man with a background of diabetes, hypertension and kidney disease.

He was admitted to the Sungai Buloh Hospital on April 3 and passed away at 2.58pm on May 21.
