Each household to receive face masks soon

PETALING JAYA: Households will soon be receiving face masks from the government to help guard against Covid-19, says Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The Malaysia Civil Defence Force is currently distributing about 24.6 million masks to National Security Council offices at state levels, before they are sent to the disaster management committees at the district level to be distributed to the people.

“Each household nationwide will receive four masks and as per the health ministry’s recommendations, only those with Covid-19 symptoms should be wearing masks.

“Frontliners will be tasked to distribute the masks from home to home,” he said.

He added that the Royal Malaysian Airforce would also fly in the masks to be distributed in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan tomorrow.

Ismail also clarified that the welfare of foreigners living at Selangor Mansion and Selangor Malayan Mansion in Jalan Masjid India is the responsibility of their respective embassies.

He said the Foreign Ministry had informed the respective embassies to look into the welfare of their citizens living in those buildings, which came under the enhanced movement control order.

However, Ismail said if any of the foreign residents needed to obtain essential items, they could put in a request with the operations centre within the premises.

“But they would have to pay for it themselves and collect those items from a designated area,” he said.

On another matter, Ismail said the government was in the process of gazetting 67 more hotels as quarantine centres, bringing the number of hotels gazetted as such to 112.

He clarified that the gazetted hotels agreed to cap the cost at RM150 a day which would go into covering the room rate and three meals.

He added that any hotels that wished to be gazetted as a quarantine centre should contact the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry.

Separately, Ismail said the government might require employers in Singapore to report on how

many Malaysian workers wanted to return home as the island republic began imposing circuit-breaker measures to break the chain of transmission of Covid-19

He said the figures on Malaysians returning from Singapore would help with managing screen tests.

He added that the issue arose because both countries had different standard operating procedures to curb the spread of the disease.

He also said that it would also be better for Malaysians working in Singapore to stay put.
