PETALING JAYA: Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has criticised Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's new Cabinet selection, saying Umno MPs were given "non-critical" ministerial positions.
“This isn’t fair with the number of MPs contributed by Umno and the level of experience which they possess,” he said in a Facebook post on Friday (March 13).
At the same time, Mohamad also said the Cabinet lineup heavily favours Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) and Datuk Seri Azmin Ali.
“It is not the most important thing for Umno to hold the government position in the current political climate, but it is important for Muhyiddin to take cognisant of party proportions,” he said.
He explained that this is because Malaysia practices the Westminster system while pointing out that the Cabinet also practices collective responsibility, which will only be effective if every party is represented proportionately.
“This is very critical because by having a united Cabinet, the government can move together with its supporters.
With challenges pertaining to the Covid-19 pandemic, falling share market and economic uncertainty, Mohamad said the government does not have any space for delays and mistakes.
A strong and inclusive Cabinet, Mohamad noted, is crucial to the success of Perikatan Nasional.
“Without a strong Cabinet, Malaysia will continue witnessing never-ending political polemics, which will also not allow us to focus on development and competency,” he added.
Over the past few days, several Umno leaders have joined in the chorus of criticism against Muhyiddin's new Cabinet, with some criticising the line-up of ministers and others alleging that it was dominated by only one party.
The latest Cabinet lineup made up of 31 ministers, includes nine MPs from Umno, as well as one each from MIC and MCA. Bersatu has 11 MPs in the lineup.
