No authorisation for wiretapping

KUALA LUMPUR: A former attorney general told the High Court that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had never sought his authorisation for wiretapping that resulted in nine audio recordings that implicated several high-profile figures with the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MBD) scandal. Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali, who was AG between 2015 and 2018, said permission from the public prosecutor, or the AG, must be obtained for any wiretapping to be legal.

The recordings, which implicated Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, among others, were said to have been made between Jan 5 and July 29,2016, when Apandi was still in office.
