Police officer charged with four counts of corruption

A police inspector charged in session court for corruption.

IPOH: A police officer has been charged with four counts of bribery at the Sessions Court here on Thursday (Feb 27).

Inspector Sahrol Zaman Mohd Adom, 38, pleaded not guilty to the charges that were read out to him before judge S. Indera Nehru.

According to the charge sheet, Sahrol Zaman was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term up to two years, or fine, or both upon conviction for each case.

Sahrol Zaman was offered bribes worth a total of RM6,000 from four different individuals for settling a case he was investigating on May 8 and May 14 in 2014. Three of the offences were committed in Perak and another in Negri Sembilan.

Nurul Wahida Jalaluddin, who prosecuted, requested RM8,000 bail for each charge.

Sahrol was represented by lawyers Mohd Shahrullah Khan Nawab Zadah Khan and Mohamad Aizat Fakri, who requested for RM5,000 bail for all four charges,

Mohd Sharullah Khan said his client was only informed a few days before the case date and that he had not enough time to get the money. He also said that his client's account had been frozen by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

Nurul Wahida said considering Sahrol Zaman was a police officer, the crime committed can be categorised as a serious act.

The judge then fixed bail at RM12,000 for all charges with one surety. The case will be mentioned on March 27.
