LTTE case: Seremban Jaya rep acquitted

PETALING JAYA (Bernama): The Kuala Lumpur High Court acquitted and discharged Seremban Jaya assemblyman P. Gunasekaran of two charges of supporting and possessing items related to the now-defunct Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eeelam (LTTE) terrorist group.

Judge Datuk Muhammad Jamil Hussin and Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali ordered the acquittal after deputy public prosecutor Suffian Jaafar informed the courts that he had instructions from Attorney-General Tommy Thomas to drop the charges against the accused.

The cases were heard in two separate courts before Muhammad Jamil and Mohd Nazlan respectively.

Gunasekaran's counsel Ramkarpal Singh told the court that since the prosecution is no longer continuing its cases against its client, he called on the court to acquit and discharge his client from both charges.

Gunasekaran, 61, was charged with supporting LTTE via Facebook under the username ‘DAP Guna Palanisamy’ at the office in Bukit Aman Counter-Terrorism Special Division at about 2pm, on Oct 7,2019.

He was also charged with supporting the group in an event at Dewan Kasturi Ayer Keroh, Jalan Utama, Taman Ayer Keroh Heights, Melaka between 8.30pm and 10.50pm on Nov 28,2018.

He was charged under Section 131J (1)(a) of the Penal Code, which carries an imprisonment for life, or for a jail term not exceeding 30 years, or with fine; and shall also be liable to forfeiture of any property used or intended to be used in connection with the offence, upon conviction.- Bernama
