Concentrate on handling spillover effects of coronavirus outbreak, Dr Wee tells govt

AYER HITAM: The Government should tackle the spillover effects of the coronavirus outbreak instead of coming up with unproductive statements, says MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic).

Dr Wee, who is also Ayer Hitam MP, said that the Government should look into ways to manage the issue, including spillover effects on the economy and the tourism industry.

"Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said that the coronavirus will not affect the economy.

"Tourism Minister (Datuk Seri Mohamaddin Ketapi) said that tourists arriving here are safe and healthy but we have already sent 14 people back to Wuhan and few were previously quarantined," he said.

He said this to reporters when met during the Ayer Hitam MCA Chinese New Year celebrations here on Friday (Jan 31).

He added that the outbreak had also impacted commodity prices, including palm oil.

"My advice to the Government is to spend some time formulating a strategy to overcome the problem at this difficult time rather than issuing statements that are not productive at all," he said.
