KUALA LUMPUR: Wanita Umno wants the position of its chief to be on par with the party deputy president to recognise the role and contribution of the wing towards the party and its struggle.
Its chief Datuk Dr Noraini Ahmad argued that its members have worked hard for the party and are always willing to roll up their sleeves to work for Umno.
"It is time that the Wanita leadership gets due recognition, be lifted and be placed at a higher level in the party.
"I seek your mandate and call on all delegates to support the motion for the Wanita chief post to be at par with the deputy president," she said in her opening address at the Wanita Umno assembly on Thursday (Dec 5).
Noraini stressed she was not fighting for a "promotion".
"This is for all of us. We want Wanita to be acknowledged for our role," she said.
She added that if the Umno leadership agreed to the proposal, the wing would honour the recognition by working harder for the party to win the hearts and minds of the people, particularly for the 15th General Election.
Noraini said the wing must start preparing for GE15 now, and outlined three missions it should embark on.
This, she said, includes strengthening the Muafakat Nasional alliance with PAS by ensuring that all involved enjoy a good understanding, cooperate and work together at all times and all levels.
"We must work closely not only for by-elections and for GE15 but must walk hand-in-hand for the sake and the wellbeing of all Malaysians.
"If we want to make this country better, we must do it together," she said.
