KUALA TERENGGANU: Floods have forced more people in Terengganu and Kelantan to seek shelter as rivers breach the danger mark.
In Terengganu, 2,296 people from 648 families in four districts had to be evacuated to higher grounds, an increase from the 875 people from 258 families on Friday night.
They are being given temporary shelter at 40 flood relief centres, with Besut having 21 alone.
According to the Welfare Department’s InfoBencana, as at 8am yesterday, 1,148 people from 290 families had been evacuated to the flood relief centres in Besut, up from 457 people in 10 relief centres the night before.
The Setiu district also recorded an increase in evacuees, from 362 to 553 people.
Similarly, floods in Hulu Terengganu forced 112 people to flee to five relief centres – up from 48 people – while in Dungun, four centres were opened to accommodate 483 people.
The water level of Sungai Besut in Kampung La is now 2m above the 21.8m danger mark, while Sungai Nerus in Kampung Langkap, Setiu, is about half a metre above the danger level of 21m.
On its portal http://publicinfobanjir.water.gov.my, the Drainage and Irrigation Department said the water level of Sungai Dungun in Kuala Jengai was at 22.45m, exceeding the danger level of 21m, while Sungai Setiu at Jambatan Permaisuri had a 8.95m reading, above the safety level of 8.8m.
The number of flood evacuees in Kelantan has also increased to 315 people from 185 people on Friday night, with Machang being the latest hit after Kuala Krai and Tanah Merah.
In Machang, 37 people were evacuated to the flood relief centre at SK Pak Roman.
In Kuala Krai, four flood relief centres had been opened to accommodate 175 evacuees while in Tanah Merah, 103 people were staying in six centres.
Two main rivers in Kelantan – Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang and Sungai Lebir in Tualang – breached their danger levels of 8m and 31m, while three other rivers – Sungai Kelantan in Kuala Krai, Sungai Kelantan in Kusial and Sungai Golok in Jenob – were now past the alert mark.
