Seberang Prai officially declared a city from Monday (Sept 16)

Seberang Prai Municipal Council president Datuk Rozali Mohamud will be officially appointed the first mayor of Seberang Prai on Monday (Sept 16).

GEORGE TOWN: The Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) is set to be declared a city council on Monday (Sept 16) with president Datuk Rozali Mohamud officially appointed as the first mayor.

Penang Housing, Town, Country Planning and Local Government Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said it would be a historic moment for the state as the only one in the country to obtain full-fledged city status for both its city councils.

The Penang Island City Council received city council status in 2015.

Jagdeep said he had informed Rozali to prepare a roadmap containing 18 new programmes and six new guidelines meant to enhance delivery of services to Seberang Prai residents.

The application to elevate MPSP to city council began in July 2018 as the local authority had fulfilled all criteria, such as having a population of more than 500,000 and revenue of RM100mil.

MPSP covers an administration area of 747.8sq km. It is the largest municipality in the country with a population of 946,200.
