Sibu Airport closed briefly after runway lights malfunction, 12 flights affected


SIBU: Sibu Airport was closed on Tuesday (Aug 13) evening for nearly an hour from 7pm due to malfunctioning runway lights, with a total of 12 inbound and outbound flights affected.

Sibu Airport manager, Zainuddin Abu Nasir said a total of 1, 561 passengers from 10 Air Asia flights and MasWings flights were affected.

The flights affected were those departing Sibu at 5.25pm to Kuching, three Sibu-Kuala Lumpur flights at 6.50pm and 7.30pm and 8.15pm, the Sibu-Miri (8.10pm) and Sibu-Kota Kinabalu (8.25pm) flights.

Others were two flights from Kuching with estimated time of arrival (ETA) of 7.35pm and 8.55pm, two from Kuala Lumpur ETA 7.05pm and 8.50pm, one from Miri ETA 7.50pm, and one from Kota Kinabalu ETA 8pm.

'We detected damages to the runway lights at 3pm today (Aug 13) and made the decision to close the runway from air traffic from 7pm to 6am tomorrow (Aug 14) for safety reasons and for technicians to repair the damages, " he added.

However, he said the repair work was completed much earlier than expected at 7.50pm.

Zainuddin added that they reopened the runway after that but the affected airlines had already rescheduled their flights to Wednesday (Aug 14).
