Twenty Africans to face charges over attack on police during raid

PETALING JAYA: A total of 20 African men are expected to face multiple charges, including rioting in connection with an attack on a police raiding team at an apartment at Damansara Perdana recently.

Selangor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Fadzil Ahmat said police have arrested a total of 20 African men for their alleged involvement in the incident.

"We have referred the matter to the deputy public prosecutor.

"The DPP has instructed for 10 of those detained to be charged under Section 147, Section 353 and Section 332 of the Penal Code, as well as Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1963.

"The remaining 10 suspects will be charged under Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1963, " he said when contacted Tuesday (Aug 6).

The suspects will be brought to the Petaling Jaya Magistrate's Court on Wednesday (Aug 7) to face the charges.

Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting provides for a jail term of up to two years, a fine or both upon conviction.

Section 353 of the Penal Code for criminal assault on a public servant, provides jail up to two years, a fine or both upon conviction, while Section 332 of the Penal Code for causing hurt on a public servant, carries up to three years jail, a fine or both upon conviction.

On July 26, three personnel and an officer raided a unit at Flora Damansara during an investigation of an online scam when they were surrounded by about 50 Africans.

The mob was aggressive and a scuffle ensued. During the scuffle, policemen in the apartment were pulled out and two African men and three African women fled the scene.

The police team retreated and called for back-up.

After reinforcements arrived, police managed to arrest 10 Africans believed to be involved in the scuffle.
