Sabah Bersatu wants programmes under 12th Malaysia Plan to overcome development imbalance

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) wants the government to form specific strategies in the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) to reduce the gap between Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia.

Its information chief, Khairul Firdaus Akbar (pic), said with the 12MP, being a five-year development plan from 2021 to 2025, this consideration was integral in determining Sabah's direction and progress post 2020.

"The government is currently working on the framework of the 12MP, which is expected to be announced next year.

"Taking into account that today's government focuses on inclusive prosperity, then the existence of such development and economic gaps between these two regions must be addressed promptly.

"We would not reach prosperity as a nation if issues like development imbalances, poverty rate and unemployment are still plaguing a huge state like Sabah," he said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 4).

In line with that, Khairul said Sabah Bersatu will initiate efforts to collect the aspirations of the Sabah folks on important matters that should be considered in the content of the 12MP.

"As a platform for the people's voices, the Sabah Bersatu information machinery at all divisions, will coordinate the move to get close with the people and understand their hopes and wishes.

"The Malaysia Plan must be developed through a 'bottom-up' approach, so that it will bring value and meaning to the people at all levels, especially those in the B40 lower income group," he added.

Based on the grassroots feedback, Khairul said Sabah Bersatu will then come up with a 12MP memorandum containing the people's aspirations, as well as recommendations for the government to consider.
