KUALA LUMPUR: A new political party to look into the interest of the Indian community has been set up, says P. Waytha Moorthy.

“The Malaysian Advancement Party (MAP) is officially formed as of today.

“I am pleased to announce that this new party has been registered with the Registrar of Societies.

“MAP will embark on its journey with its objectives to protect, promote and advance the interest of the Indian community in their political, economic, educational, cultural, religious and social aspects,” the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department said in a statement.

He said as a people’s movement, the party wanted to play a crucial role in the renewed hope and opportunities under the Pakatan Harapan government for the Malaysian Indian community with effective representation.

“MAP’s direction and vision is to adopt fundamental rights and needs-based approach for socio-economic advancement towards community empowerment and resilience.

“The values that we will propagate include inclusiveness, equality, quality, originality, integrity and transparency with an effort to restore the intention of our forefathers in this multicultural nation,” he said.

He added that the party would partake in a positive and constructive manner with all existing Pakatan parties to enhance the agenda for shared prosperity under the Malaysia Baru government.

Waytha Moorthy also said that in light of him leading the new party, he would be resigning from his position as Hindraf chairman.

“An extraordinary general meeting will be called soon to elect a new chairman to continue its role as the watchdog for the Indian community,” he said.
