Briyani restaurant shuttered two weeks after rat droppings, dead lizard find

GEORGE TOWN: A famous nasi briyani restaurant on Lebuh Chulia has been ordered to close for two weeks by the Health Department after rat droppings and dead lizards were found in the kitchen.

Health inspectors on Wednesday (July 10) found the area where food was being prepared to be unsanitary.

They issued a notice under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983, ordering the restaurant to clean up its act by July 23.

The inspectors will return three days after the issuance of the notice, and if they are satisfied with the condition of restaurant after it's cleaned up, it may be allowed to reopen.

The restaurant, which boasts a variety of local cuisines along the busy street, is popular among tourists.

This is the second time that the restaurant has been ordered to close by health authorities – the last being in July last year.
