BANDAR PERMAISURI: It could be a bleak Hari Raya Aidifiltri celebration for two drivers and four passengers of a double-decker Express Sani bus.
The bus, on its way from Kuala Besut, Terengganu, to Kajang, Selangor, suddenly caught fire when it was at a traffic light junction in Chalok near here at about 10.30am yesterday.
Fortunately, all six managed to get out in the nick of time. The bus was almost 95% destroyed.
Driver Hilmi Mamat, 46, said he noticed smoke coming out from the back of the bus when it was at the junction.
He scrambled to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher that was on board but the flames spread too fast.
“There were also explosions. I quickly ordered everyone to get out. My co-driver made a distress call and firefighters arrived a short while later,” he said at the scene.
The passengers were later transferred to another express bus that was heading to Kuala Lumpur.
One of the passengers, Addiernizam Abd Aziz, 35, said he was sleeping on the upper deck when he was woken up by the driver and was told to hurry towards the exit.
“There was no time to even bring along my belongings. My bag contained three months of my earnings as a professional diver in Pulau Perhentian.
“This is very sad because all my Aidilfitri plans have gone up in smoke. But thank God, we managed to escape unharmed,” said Addiernizam, who was heading back to his hometown, Subang in Selangor, to celebrate Aidilfitri. — Bernama
