SEOUL: Asia News Network (ANN), the alliance of 24 media groups from 20 regional nations, has set a new vision for itself as the grouping celebrates its 20th anniversary here – Bringing Asia Closer.
Senior editors of member media groups who make up the ANN board deliberated and decided on the new vision and mission after the network grew out of its original vision of “We Know Asia Better”.
ANN was founded in 1999 and its original founding members – The Statesman (India), The Jakarta Post (Indonesia), The Star, Sin Chew Daily, The Manila Times (The Philippines), The Straits Times (Singapore), The Nation (Thailand) and Viet Nam News (Vietnam) – decided that the mission then was to deliver news about Asia by Asians for Asians.
“As the network marked its 20th birthday, we need to redefine its future path,” said Chon Shi-yong, chief editor of The Korea Herald and 2018 ANN chairman in his opening speech.
ANN aims to be the leading network of Asian media organisations, collaborating across platforms to deliver quality news and information – both to bring Asian countries closer to each other and to tell the story of the “Asian century” to the world.
The board agreed that it is critical for ANN member companies to invest in human capital and technical resources for the relevant and timely sharing of news, opinion and video content.
Warren Fernandez, the editor-in-chief of Singapore’s Straits Times, was also named ANN chairman for the 2019-2020 term.
During the three-day visit here, ANN participated in the Asean-Korea Media Forum that it sponsored and met with President Moon Jae-in on Thursday.
The board members also went to the Samsung Innovation Museum in Suwon, Gyeonggi province, as a part of a “Technology for Media” session on Friday.
