Parit Sulong MP Dr Noraini Ahmad is new PAC chairman after voice vote

KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional's Parit Sulong lawmaker Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad has officially replaced Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee as the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman.

This was done after a motion was tabled in the Dewan Rakyat was Thursday (April 11).

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong had read out the motion in Parliament, and it was passed through a voice vote.

Noraini, who is also Wanita Umno chief, will replace Kiandee, who had left Sabah Umno to join Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia on March 15.

Previously, Opposition MPs had resigned from the PAC pending the replacement of Kiandee as its chairman.

There are 12 PAC members - eight from Pakatan Harapan, two from Barisan, and one each from PAS and Parti Pesak Bumiputera Bersatu.

In its GE14 manifesto, Pakatan had pledged an Opposition MP would lead the PAC.

Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar had also earlier resigned from the PAC, however, she has rejoined the committee, following the move to replace Kiandee.

The PAC is a Parliamentary oversight committee that examines the government's financial operations, accounts and funds granted by Parliament.

It also studies the Auditor-General's reports and may also probe troubled government entities, projects and programmes to make recommendations.
