PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the new names for the post of Johor Mentri Besar will be presented to the Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar after he accepted the resignation of Datuk Osman Sapian.
The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president said that Osman had sent his resignation to the Johor Sultan on Monday (April 8).
Muhyiddin, who is also Home Minister, said in a statement on Wednesday (April 10) that the party respected Osman’s decision and thanked him for his services.
“I hope the process to replace the Mentri Besar will take place in an orderly way, so that the administration of the Johor government goes on smoothly.
“It is important that the effort to drive the progress of the state is not disturbed by this transition of leadership,” he said, adding that Pakatan Harapan was committed to ensuring the progress of Johor.
Muhyiddin also urged Johorians in general, as well as party members to be calm and to accept the leadership’s decision.
After the resignation of Datuk Osman Sapian, there has been much discussion as to whether the Sultan of Johor has the absolute right to appoint a new mentri besar of his choice.
Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad stated that it was the role of the party that won the elections to appoint the mentri besar and not the state ruler.
In response, Sultan Ibrahim said he wants certain groups to stop meddling in matters concerning Johor, vowing that he would make the best decision for the people when the time came.
