KOTA KINABALU: A man slapped his wife, threatened to chop her with an axe and burn down their home after she could not buy him a car.

The 26-year-old was arrested by police after his 45-year-old wife made a report Monday (March 25) four days after the incident at their home in Kg Sapagaya Hilir in Lahad Datu at about 6pm on Thursday (March 21).

Lahad Datu district police chief Asst Comm Nasri Mansor said Tuesday (March 26) that the wife and her three children ran from their home in fear on Friday (Mar 22) to hide in the house of her brother before coming out to lodge a report on Monday.

He said the initial investigations showed that her 26-year-old Indonesian husband had confronted his wife, a teacher, when she returned home after picking up her children from school.

She alleged that the suspect slapped her when she told him she could not afford to buy him the car. The suspect also threatened to harm her with an axe and burn down their house.

He said police arrested the suspect from a house at Kampung Sapagaya Hilir at 3.50pm on the same day the report was lodged.

They also seized an axe that was used by the suspect during the quarrel with his wife.

ACP Nasir said the suspect also tested positive for drugs.

Police investigations showed that the suspect married the victim on Feb 8 last year and they had one child together.

It was the third marriage for the woman, who had two other children from her first marriage.
