Sitiawan man who set himself on fire dies

IPOH: The man in Sitiawan who set himself on fire after quarrelling with his girlfriend has died.

Manjung OCPD Asst Comm Muhammad Hanif Othman said the police received information from the Seri Manjung Hospital that the 21-year-old died on Wednesday (March 20) at about 6.20pm.

ACP Muhammad Hanif said a post-mortem would be conducted to determine the cause of death.

It was reported that the incident took place on Monday (March 18) night in front of a house in Kampung Bintang.

 The man was said to have suffered almost 90% burns on the body.

He was then sent to the hospital for treatment and warded at the Intensive Care Unit.

ACP Muhammad Hanif said the matter was being investigated under Section 309 of the Penal Code for attempted suicide.

He added that statements from witnesses have been taken, and police are also reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage.
