Student drowns during swimming lesson in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: A secondary school student has drowned during swimming lesson at the Sports Complex in Likas near here on Wednesday (Feb 13) morning.

The 14-year-old had gone to the complex for his swimming lesson at about 11.15am with some friends, their teachers and coaches prior to the incident.

Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm Habibi Majinji said the student was found to be unresponsive in the water not long after that.

“The victim was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital around noon, and was pronounced dead at 12.38pm,” he said in a statement.

He said police found no foul play in the incident as of now, but a post mortem is expected to be conducted soon to find out the cause of death.

ACP Habibi said they were investigating the case, and will be getting more statements from the teachers and other students at the scene.
