New political funding Act expected to be tabled this year

PUTRAJAYA: A new Act on political funding is on the cards, and the aim is to have it ready to be tabled in this year's Parliament session.

Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption Centre director-general Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed said the centre had been engaging with political parties to get their input and to hear their concerns on political funding.

"With this law, parties will have to disclose all sources of funding, including donations.

"If this is not adhered to, there will be punitive action," he said to reporters on Tuesday (Jan 29).

Abu Kassim said that GIACC is at the tail-end of getting feedback from political parties before presenting it to Cabinet.

After getting the green light, the matter will be left to the Attorney-General's Chambers to draft the law.

Abu Kassim said also proposed that foreign donation be prohibited with the Act.

On another matter, he said the proposed Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission was also at the final stages of formulation.

"We are getting some more input from the AGC before we can bring it to Cabinet," he said.

The IPCMC is a police oversight body that has the power to investigate police misconduct, as well as to take necessary action.
