SCHOOLS have the autonomy to increase recess time from 20 minutes to 30 minutes, Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching said.
Sin Chew Daily quoted her as saying this when she visited SJK (C) Subang in Selangor following complaints from parents that the 20-minute recess was not adequate for pupils.
Apparently, some of the pupils would eat while standing; others would just wolf down their food.
Teo said that the Education Ministry’s policy allowed for recess time to be between 20 and 30 minutes.
“Schools do not need to apply for permission from any agency. The ministry allows the schools to determine the time as the situation is different for each school,” she said.
