KUALA LUMPUR: MCA's call for the dissolution of Barisan Nasional is respected but it needs the consensus of all partners, said Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
“I will hold negotiations and discussions with the other four core parties, " said Dr Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Barisan chairman
Dr Ahmad Zahid said that MCA leaders had met with him last week regarding their proposal, adding that he is set to organise a discussion regarding the matter with the coalition's component parties
"Although it’s only a proposal, they must know that any decision by Barisan must be made with a consensus,” he added when speaking to reporters at the Parliament lobby on Monday (Dec 3).
Presently, Barisan consists of Umno, MCA, MIC, myPPP, and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS).
In MCA’s 65th annual general meeting on Sunday (Dec 2), party president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said that the party’s central committee was authorised to pave the way for the dissolution of Barisan.
Together with Ummo and MIC, MCA formed the Alliance coalition and fought for the country’s independence in 1957.
In 1973, the Alliance was renamed Barisan Nasional and it ruled the country until it lost to Pakatan Harapan in the 14th General Election on May 9.
