MCA's position in Barisan will be decided on Sunday (Dec 2)

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA could have a conclusion on whether to quit Barisan Nasional on Sunday (Dec 2) after the party’s annual general assembly, says its party secretary-general Datin Chew Mei Fun.

“It will be discussed tomorrow (Dec 2) during the party annual general assembly. I cannot answer the question at the moment,” she said at the press conference after the opening of the 43rd Wanita MCA annual general meeting.

She was responding to a question on whether the party’s move not to invite Barisan’s component parties to attend this year’s annual general assembly was intended to cut ties with the coalition.

“We will discuss the issue tomorrow. We will then have a decision and an exact answer. What you just asked is purely speculation,” Chew added.

On Nov 18, Umno president Dr Ahmad Zahid called for a merger between Umno and PAS during a gathering between the two parties against the ratification of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).

However, Abdul Hadi, who was present at the event, appeared to disregard Dr Ahmad Zahid’s overture.

MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said Dr Ahmad Zahid has disregarded the feelings of Barisan component party members and should uphold the Barisan’s spirit of working together with different races.

Barisan formed state governments in Pahang and Perlis. MCA won only one parliamentary seat and two state seats under the Barisan ticket in the May 9 polls.

MCA won the Titi Tinggi state seat in Perlis and the Cheka state seat in Pahang in GE14. Titi Tinggi assemblyperson Teh Chai Aan has now become the sole MCA state exco member in the country.
