Woman loses MyKad, lodges report saying she was robbed

KOTA KINABALU: A 39-year-old woman lost her MyKad and to avoid paying for the penalty to make a new one, lodged a fake police report saying she was robbed.

The woman from Sandakan had apparently lost her MyKad and had gone to the National Registration Department (NRD) to replace it.

However, when she was told that she had to pay a penalty for losing it, she decided to lodge a police report on Oct 21.

Sandakan police chief Asst Comm Mohd Azhar Hamin said the woman had claimed that at 5.30am on Oct 21, she was waiting at a bus-station when suddenly two men on a motorcycle came up to her.

“She said that her handbag was snatched by the two men, causing her to lose all her documents, among other items,” he said.

“After investigating, we found that there were discrepancies in her story and realised that she faked the whole thing to avoid paying a penalty to the NRD,” he said.

The woman was subsequently arrested and is being investigated for making a false report.

She could be fined up to RM2,000 or jailed up to six months, or both, if convicted.

A person will be fined RM110 the first time they lose their MyKad, RM310 for the second time, and RM1,010 for the third time.

Police will investigate if a person loses his or her MyKad more than three times.
