2 dead, 2 injured as 4-wheel-drive crashes into road divider at Tawau

KOTA KINABALU: Two teenagers were killed, while two others sustained injuries following a mishap along Jalan Apas, Tawau on Wednesday night (Sept 19).

The victims, who were fishmongers, were believed headed to Semporna to deliver fish when the driver, identified as Gapor Akmad, 34, lost control of the four wheel drive they were travelling in after a tyre burst.

Tawau police chief Asst Comm Fadil Marsus said the burst tyre caused the car to swerve before crashing into a road divider at about 11.30pm.

He said the vehicle continued swerving in circles after crashing into the road divider before coming to a stop, with the fish all scattered on the road.

“Two victims seated at the back of the vehicle, Mohd Firdaus Kadapi, 18, and Nor Asri Amirullah, 19, were thrown out of their seats following the impact of the crash,” he said in a statement here on Thursday (Sept 20).

ACP Fadil said Firdaus was killed on the spot, while Asri was pronounced dead at the Tawau Hospital.

Gapor, and another victim, Hafiz Kadapi, 17, sustained injuries and received treatment at the hospital.

The case is being investigated under the Road Transport Act 1987.
