MACC arrests two PKR members for bribery, six-day remand obtained

ALOR SETAR: Two PKR members were arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) here on Saturday (Sept 15) for attempting to solicit a RM20,000 bribe.

It was learnt that the duo, aged 46 and 48, both members of the Kedah PKR election committee, allegedly asked for RM20,000 from a candidate to ensure that his name remains in the system for the party divisional election scheduled for Sept 22.

According to a source, the suspects told the candidate that his name would be dropped from the list of candidates unless he paid the money.

The 48-year-old man was arrested at 12.20pm at a restaurant in Alor Setar on Saturday while the 46-year-old man at 3.25pm at the Pendang Toll Plaza along the North-South Expressway.

The graft busters also seized RM10,000 cash in total from the duo.

Kedah MACC director Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohamad confirmed the arrests of the two men.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC act for corruptly soliciting, receiving or agreeing to receive any gratification as an inducement or reward.

In ALOR SETAR, the duo arrived at the court complex at 9.45am Sunday (Sept 16) and were escorted by MACC officers to the courtroom.

Magistrate Mohd Hadi Hakimi Harun granted a remand order for the duo until Sept 21.
