PETALING JAYA: Order books for Proton’s long-awaited 1.8-litre turbocharged sport utility vehicle (SUV) with a six-speed automatic transmission opens today.
Those interested will have to place a RM1,000 deposit. However, Proton is tightlipped on the prices for the four variants of the SUV.
The car manufacturer’s SUV was showcased to the media in a preview in Subang Jaya yesterday.
With the name of the Geely Boyue-based vehicle announced as the X70, this marks the first time a Proton model has received an alphanumeric nomenclature.
The name was chosen after Proton held an online contest and Malaysians were asked to choose one among the four proposed names – PX70, X7, X70 and X700.
It is leant that the use of the name X70 was to make it easier for Proton to sell the X70 in Asean and other international markets as “with no language barriers to overcome”.
“The letter X is also synonymous with crossovers or SUV vehicles, so using it makes it easy to identify the segment this Proton model is from while the number 70 denotes the size or class of the SUV, giving Proton a logical system to add bigger or smaller models in the future,” said Proton Edar CEO Abdul Rashid Musa.
Proton will be holding a series of customer events in seven towns and cities to gauge public response to the X70 from Sept 19 to Nov 4.
The events would also enable the public, banking and insurance industry and corporate buyers the opportunity to take a closer look at the X70 before its official launch scheduled in early December.
Proton said it aimed to attract at least 6,000 people through such media and customer previews.
