Broke and busted: Thai cops charge Malaysian with filing fake report about being robbed

CHIANG MAI (The Nation/Asia News Network): A Malaysian tourist in Thailand who claimed that he had been robbed has been charged with filing a false police report.

Thai police say the man, Pravin Krishnan, 20, admitted to lying because he had run out of money and needed an excuse for his parents in Malaysia to send him more.

He was booked at 3am on Friday (Aug 17), less than two hours after lodging the report.

Krishnan had claimed that a Caucasian man with a blond beard robbed him at knifepoint while he was walking on a street here at 1am.

Police went to the scene of the alleged crime, spoke to residents and a security guard but found no witnesses.

They returned to the police station and confronted Krishnan, who then admitted it was a scam.

He said that he wanted a copy of the report to convince his parents to send him more money and did not want to be scolded for blowing his budget. – The Nation/Asia News Network
