PKR MPs willing to give up seats for Anwar, says Selayang MP William Leong

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR MPs would be willing to relinquish their seats to allow Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to contest a parliament seat, said Selayang MP William Leong Jee Keen.

He denied rumours that he had been requested to vacate his seat, but said he would gladly do so if asked.

“Any of the PKR MPs would give way for him. So far, I am not aware of any discussion on this,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby on Monday (August 6).

He expressed his willingness to do so despite the penalty imposed on MPs who vacated their seats before the term ends.

A lawmaker who does this is not allowed to contest any election for the next five years.

“Selayang voters will gladly accept a future prime minister as their MP.

"It is ultimately the same party and logo, only the personality representing them will be bigger,” he said.

Anwar had recently hinted that he may return to Parliament.

Pakatan Harapan campaigned in the 14th general election on the platform that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will be Prime Minister for two years before passing the role to Anwar.

However, Dr Mahathir has since suggested that he may stay on longer.
