Malaysia to donate RM400K to assist victims of Laos dam collapse

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia will contribute US$100,000 (RM400,000) to Laos following the collapse of a dam that caused more than 1,400 people to be homeless and over 100 missing.
 
Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah conveyed this to the Laotian Foreign Minister H.E. Saleumxay Kommasith during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Asean Ministerial Meeting in Singapore on Friday (Aug 3).  
 
“In the spirit of Asean solidarity, Malaysia hopes that the contribution will assist Lao PDR facilitate its relief efforts. 

"It is of utmost importance for Malaysia to offer assistance within its means and capabilities to neighbouring countries affected by natural calamities,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.
 
The collapse of the Xe-Pien-Xe Namnoy dam in Attapeu Province following flash floods has caused vast destruction on properties and livelihood of the people in the vicinity.
