Remembering Teoh Beng Hock

SEMENYIH: Family members and friends came together for a memorial service to pay tribute to the late Teoh Beng Hock, an aide to former Selangor exco member Ean Yong Hian Wah.

Some political leaders who turned up were DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng and Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai, as well as Nirvana Asia founder Tan Sri David Kong.

Recently, Guan Eng confirmed that the Cabinet had decided on a fresh probe.

Teoh, 30, was found dead on July 16, 2009, on the fifth floor corridor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam after giving a statement at the Selangor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office on the 14th floor of the building.

AirAsia raises RM300,300 for Makna activities

PETALING JAYA: AirAsia presented a cheque for RM300,300 to the National Cancer Council of Malaysia (Makna) to champion cancer awareness and support underprivileged cancer fighters through its campaign #AirAsiaMAKNA.

The sum was raised from selling limited edition pilot and cabin crew T-shirts.

AirAsia’s BIG loyalty programme also presented two million AirAsia BIG points to Makna to further assist cancer patients by providing air travel.

“Cancer is a worldwide disease that affects anyone. At AirAsia, we have many passionate cancer survivor Allstars (AirAsia employees) who never cease to inspire us with their tenacity and positivity,” said AirAsia Malaysia chief executive officer Riad Asmat.

“We knew that something has to be done to help those going through the big C in the communities we serve in,” said Riad.

Luck runs out for 13 gambling dens

LABUAN: Police raided 13 illegal gambling dens on the duty-free island and arrested four suspects.

District police chief Supt Muhamad Farid Ahmad said the raids were conducted at several villages, following surveillance and complaints from the public.

“The latest raid was made on Thursday night on a premises operating the wahui illegal gambling in one of the villages,” he said.

Among the popular illegal games of chance were wahui, illegal 4D, online gambling and ketam-ketam.

Supt Muhamad Farid said police also seized cash, online gambling tokens and other gambling paraphernalia. — Bernama

Suspected drunk driver kills four in Tawau

TAWAU: Four men were killed and another man broke his left leg after they were rammed by a car at the BDC commerical centre parking lot in Jalan Chong Thien Vun.

In the 1.15am incident yesterday, the car driven by a 34-year-old woman also rammed into three other vehicles.

District police chief Asst Comm Fadil Marsus said initial investigations showed the incident was due to negligence of the driver, who is believed to be drunk.

“The woman, who was also injured, was heading to Jalan Tiku from Tawau town but lost control of her car,” he said in a statement.

ACP Fadil said the four victims were Hiew Nyuk Wei, 30, Clawence Wong Vun Kit, 21, Dicson Lim Kien Shing, 16, and Chong Wei Chan, 21. — Bernama
