Khairy concedes defeat to Zahid in Umno presidential race

PETALING JAYA: Umno presidential candidate Khairy Jamaluddin has conceeded defeat to Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

In a series of tweets that was interrupted at one point after Argentina scored a goal against France in the World Cup, Khairy thanked party delegates for embracing democracy in the party.

“I accept the decision with an open heart. Insya Allah (God wiling) Umno’s new line-up will be able to restore the people’s confidence towards our party.

“Make total changes. Prove that Umno can change for the better,” he tweeted on Saturday night, as the game between Argentina and France was taking place.

In the next tweet, Khairy wrote: “Just a moment, Argentina has just scored.”

Two minutes later, Khairy sent out another tweet saying that he will continue to carry out his duties as Member of Parliament for Rembau and as its deputy division chief.

He also thanked Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah - the third presidential candidate for being a statesman and for his involvement in the party polls.
