GEORGE TOWN: The state government has come forward to debunk a viral message urging all senior citizens to visit Pakatan Harapan assemblymen’s service centres to sign up for a yearly free medical card worth RM700 and bereavement payouts worth RM2,500.

Penang Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said the messages circulating on social media were fake and a tactic used to create unnecessary issues.

“We know after GE14, the expectations of people are high, but this information circulating is untrue.

“The information that is circulating is actually offered by the Selangor government under their Skim Peduli Sihat (Health Care Scheme) and Golden Age-Friendly Scheme.

“Their Health Care Scheme offers between RM200 and RM500 based on their individual and family categories, while senior citizens and the disabled are entitled to the RM2,500 bereavement fund,” he said.

Phee said in Penang, the bereavement fund was RM1,000, given out to senior citizens, single mothers and the disabled under the Penang I-Sejahtera programme.

“The state government has introduced the Healthy Penang Programme which gives RM300 for households with income of RM5,000 and below and RM150 for individuals with income of RM2,500 and below, both capped at RM50 per clinic visit which will be credited to their ‘I Love Penang Card’ each year.

“The programme is expected to benefit 195,000 households in Penang costing RM60mil per year,” he said.

Phee said the Penang Institute, tasked with implementing the ‘I Love Penang’, had set up the system but was in the finalising stages, as the state wanted to incorporate more incentives.

Meanwhile, Phee also announced that the deadline to register for the I-Sejahtera programme had been extended to July 15.

“Usually it ends on June 30 but this time due to the general election, we have extended the date.

“This time, applicants under the Golden Mother Scheme will receive their payouts on Aug 11 and 12, given out at various Maybank branches statewide.

“The Senior Citizen Appreciation Programme and Single Mother aid will be given out between Sept 22 and 28 at district offices while the Golden Student Scheme will be given out during the same time at various Maybank branches.”
