MMEA detains two cargo ships for illegal fishing off Miri

MIRI: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has detained two cargo ships with 28 Vietnamese crew members for illegal fishing off Miri waters.

The MMEA also seized 10 tonnes of fish from the two ships at about 6.30pm on Monday (June 25).

The raid was carried out after the MMEA detected the ships during a patrol round.

The agency said Tuesday (June 26) that the ships reportedly belonged to a company which has a track record of illegal fishing.

"The 10,000kg of illegal harvest are worth about RM100,000 in the market," it said.

MMEA's patrol teams have towed the seized items and ships to its dockyard at Kg Pulau Melayu near Miri city.

The crew members are also being held for further questioning.
