Penang Umno chairman will not contest in upcoming party election

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Umno chairman Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Osman (pic) will not contest any supreme council or state position in the upcoming Umno election.

In a press statement on Wednesday (June 6), Zainal said he would let the delegates choose his successor as the Nibong Tebal Umno division chief.

He said he is also quitting as the Penang Umno chairman and added that he would let the Umno president choose his successor.

“I will ensure a smooth transition of power to my successor, effective from his appointment. I would like to thank everyone that has helped and supported me during my tenure as the supreme council member, state chairman, division chief as well as the division vice-chief, in the period of 25 years,” he said.

Zainal said with the experience and “DNA” that he has, he will remain loyal in Umno’s battle and continue to assist the party in an unofficial capacity.

He also apologised for any shortcomings and mistakes while he was carrying out the responsibilities that were entrusted to him.

“I have done my best, especially to the Malays and Islam in Penang,” he said.
