GEORGE TOWN: Tommy Thomas is qualified to be the new Attorney General as he has the experience and is well-versed in constitutional law, says Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh.
“I hope a new AG is appointed immediately as the country needs an AG to function,” said Ramkarpal, who is also a lawyer.
When asked if there would be conflict of interest as Thomas is representing Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng in the committal proceeding against him, Ramkarpal said he needed time to look into the matter before he could comment.
A news portal reported that Thomas was one of the lawyers representing Lim who was then the Penang chief minister in his application to set aside the leave obtained by AG Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali to initiate committal proceeding against him (Lim).
Lim was alleged to have said that the charges against him over a house purchase were politically motivated.
On June 30, 2016, Lim pleaded not guilty in the Penang High Court to corruption charges.
