PUTRJAYA: “We will be waiting for him” – that was the response of Lim Guan Eng over 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) chief executive officer and president Arul Kanda Kandasamy's possible legal suit.

“Arul Kanda has made many promises and if he said that he wants to sue, we will be waiting for him,” the Finance Minister told reporters here Thursday.

Lim said that he was unsure if Arul Kanda would proceed with the legal action, but added that he was free to do so.

He noted that Arul Kanda is the sole employee of 1MDB which is owned by his ministry.

Asked if the ministry would sack Arul Kanda, Lim said that the ministry would take things “step by step”.

Earlier on Thursday, Arul Kanda described the attack on his character by the Finance Minister as being unjustified.

He denied the “potentially defamatory personal attacks” by Lim, adding that he is seeking legal advice on the matter.

On Wednesday (May 23), Lim told a press conference that two 1MDB directors – Datuk Norazman Ayob and Datuk Kamal Mohd Ali – had informed the Finance Ministry that 1MDB is insolvent and unable to repay its debts.

Lim had a separate meeting with Arul Kanda as well as former 1MDB chief financial officer Azmi Tahir and former 1MDB general counsel Ivan Chen.

Lim lambasted Arul Kanda as being “utterly dishonest and untrustworthy”.
