Zambry: Perakians won't be baited by promise of public holidays

IPOH: Perakians have more important matters to be concerned about and won’t be baited by the promise of extra public holidays, says Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.

“Well, it all depends on how people see things – but are they so easily taken in?” he told reporters after a meeting with orang asli tok batin (traditional leaders) at the state secretariat building on Wednesday (April 11).

“But if that’s what the people want, it can be discussed and we also can announce public holidays,” he added.

Earlier, Perak Pakatan Harapan said it would declare May 10 and 11, the two days after the polling day, as public holidays if it wins the election.

Dr Zambry said the polling date of May 9 was set after proper deliberation.

“The Election Commission had to think about logistics, venue preparations and other things before they came to that decision.

“They may have forgotten that a former prime minister also held polls on weekdays,” he said.

During Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's time as premier, general elections had been held on a Thursday (Apr 22, 1982), Tuesday (April 25, 1995), and Monday (Nov 29, 1999), among others.
