‘Listen, listen, listen’ Bawani to contest under PSM ticket

IPOH: Listen up – the Perak state seat of Malim Nawar is about to see a new but familiar face contesting there in the coming general election.

It is learnt that lawyer K.S. Bawani (pic), seen arguing on the right to free education in a viral video in 2013, will be contesting on a PSM ticket in a three-cornered fight with MCA and DAP.

In the video, Bawani – then a student – was seen being repeatedly told to “listen, listen, listen” by Suara Wanita 1Malaysia president Sharifah Zohra Jabeen during a December 2012 Universiti Utara Malaysia forum for speaking out in favour of free education.

Bawani had turned down the chance to contest in the 2013 general election. She was called to the Bar in 2016.

When launching its manifesto last week, PSM unveiled its plan to contest five parliamentary and 12 state seats.

In Perak, apart from Bawani, brothers Chin Kwai Leong and Chin Kwai Heng will contest the Menglembu and Tronoh state seats respectively. Other candidates include state PSM committee member R. Rani, who will stand in Buntong, while party deputy chairman M. Sarasvathy will vie for Jelapang.

For the parliamentary seats, Dr Michael Jeyakumar will defend Sungai Siput while party coordinator K. Kunasekaran will stand in Batu Gajah.

On the most likely scenario of a three-cornered fight in Sungai Siput, Dr Jeyakumar said it would benefit Barisan Nasional.

“There is a high chance of Barisan winning Sungai Siput if Pakatan Harapan were to contest there.

“My concern is that Barisan will get back their two-thirds majority,” he said.

“Frankly, we do not want to fight Pakatan. They, however, are just not talking to us over the seat allocation matter and won’t even accept PSM as a junior partner.”
