Mother arrested for selling daughter into prostitution

MIRI: Police have arrested a 30-year-old housewife who is being investigated over the sale of her teenage daughter into prostitution.

It is learnt that the woman had sold off her daughter to a karaoke owner to pay off her debts.

Sarawak CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Dev Kumar confirmed that police in Lawas arrested the mother at 2.15pm and the karaoke owner at about 3pm on Sunday.

He said the case came to light after the village headman brought the 14-year-old victim to lodge a police report at 10.55am on Sunday.

"The ketua kampung brought the girl to the police after he learnt about her plight. The girl said she was forced by her own mother to provide sex," he said.

SAC Dev said that the victim told police that she was raped three times by a man in a hotel and that the man paid the karaoke owner RM1,000 to have her.

Police are now searching for the man who had paid to have sex with the victim as the case is classified as rape, he added.

Both mother and karaoke owner are now being held at the Lawas police lockup.

SAC Dev said the duo would be brought to court on Monday for an extension of the remand pending detailed investigations.
