Dr M attends rally in with son and Muhyiddin

KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was among the senior politicians seen at the Bersih 5 rally.

He was spotted with his son Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir and former deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Dr Mahathir, who was photographed wearing a yellow shirt upon touching down at Subang airport on a flight from Sudan, headed immediately to the city centre.

He stopped at various places, including near the KLCC where he addressed the crowd.

In his speech, Dr Mahathir, who had briefly attended the Bersih rally last year, urged the people to continue to rally.

“My body is weak, but my spirit is strong. Strengthen your hearts and your resolve and we can succeed in our struggle,” he said.

Muhyiddin, who did not attend the rally last year, said Bersih 5 was not illegal.

Besides opposition leaders such as Lim Kit Siang, Lim Guan Eng and Nurul Izzah Anwar, members from the group of eminent Malays known as G25 also joined in the Bersih rally.

“We have also issued pamphlets to be distributed to the people,” said G25 spokesman Datuk Noor Farida Ariffin when contacted.

She said the flyer, titled “Malaysia must restore good governance for social and economic stability”, highlighted G25’s stand on the need for institutional reforms.

The group identified four key points for the Government to address – uphold parliamentary democracy and the Rukunegara, institute a clean and efficient government, reform key institutions, and provide an inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

Among G25 members at the rally were former director-general of the Public Service Department Tan Sri Alwi Jantan, retired civil servant Datuk Zainuddin Bahari and former diplomat Datuk Abdul Kadir Mohd Deen.
