Wee: Protect Constitution, don’t disrupt diversity

PETALING JAYA: Any attempts to disrupt the country’s diversity should be opposed to the end and there should not be any grounds for ambiguity, said MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

He is also strongly against the tabling of the hudud amendment bill.

“Though I am still recovering, as a lawmaker, the onus is on me to take a stand on this matter.

“I must join hands with the like-minded to protect the Federal Constitution and the principles on which this country was founded,” he posted on his Facebook page yesterday.

Dr Wee is overseas recuperating from spinal surgery.

The Ayer Hitam MP said Malaysia’s diversity is its asset and is something to be cherished.

“This is what MCA and the Alliance – later known as Barisan Nasional – fought to preserve. It is also a part of the 1Malaysia spirit promoted by the Federal Govern­ment,” he said.

As such, any attempts to disrupt the country’s diversity should be opposed to the end, he said, adding that “there should not be any grounds for ambiguity”.

“We will influence other component parties to preserve diversity in Malaysia, and to protect our Constitution,” said Dr Wee.

Party secretary-general Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan said the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 is a clear demarcation between Syariah law and civil law.

“If the amendment to this Act is allowed, it will open a Pandora’s box.

“The core question that we must ask ourselves is: why should we want to disrupt the peace and stability which our forefathers have strived so hard to achieve,” said Ong in a statement yesterday.

He said the amendment would result in the creation of precedents that would lead to the encroachment on the realms of the current legal system, of which the Federal Constitution is paramount.

“Such a disruption to the core principles of our Federal Cons­titution should not be allowed as those principles have brought peace and stability to our multi-­racial nation.” said Ong.
