Bank Pitis harks back to old Kelantan

Mint history: Bank Pitis or Money bank was once an important site for storing money and safe keeping of Kelantan government documents and played an integral part of the palace and government administration during the late 18th and 19th century.

KOTA BARU: Many outsiders would not know that Kelantan had its own monetary system until the 19th century. It used its own coin called pitis, made from tin, that was round and with a hole in the centre. Other currencies used in the state in the 16th to 19th centuries were Kijang coins, sun dinar and gold coins with Arabic inscriptions.

Kelantan ceased minting its own coins in 1909 when the British began issuing money for the Straits Settlements. During the time of the pitis, a strong room was used to store treasury notes and important state documents.
