PETALING JAYA: What makes a Malaysian a militant? Their profiles are as various as their backgrounds, according to an expert who has studied them.

Those who have joined militant groups in Syria and Iraq or arrested for being active supporters, include high-ranking persons holding hono­rific titles, professionals like doctors, highly-educated people, businessmen, university students, unemployed young men and also school dropouts.
