Johor prince defends sister who doesn’t wear tudung

JOHOR BARU: Tunku Temenggong Johor Tunku Idris ibni Sultan Ibrahim has taken to social media to defend his sister’s dressing.

On his Instagram account, the Johor prince posted a photo of his sister, Tunku Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, with her hair tied in a bun and wearing a baby blue baju kurung.

“When I see comments about my sister not wearing a tudung (headscarf), it does tick me off,” Tunku Idris posted yesterday.

He went on to vouch for his sister, saying that she prayed more than some of those who wore tudung and that she wore a selendang (shawl) at all religious events.

“Is that not good enough? Isn’t it between her and Allah?” he questioned, adding that there was no need for people to make her look bad.

Tunku Idris stressed that people nowadays were starting to forget that Malays were not Arabs and that dressing like an Arab did not make one any more religious.

He said besides being a religious attire, the hijab was a cultural attire for the Arabs as it protected the wearer from the heat or sandstorms.

“Someone alim (pious) once told me, you wear a hijab when you’re really beautiful or really ugly and could cause distraction to others. Makes me wonder – who are we to judge,” said Tunku Idris.

The post went viral in a matter of hours with many of his followers also supporting Tunku Idris’ views.

At press time, the post had gotten more than 7,130 likes and over 400 comments.
